Course overview
The aim of this course is to introduce students to a range of environmental and occupational factors which may pose a risk to the health of human populations. Students will learn about how the environments in which people grow, live, work and play may influence their health, with a focus on diseases associated with common occupational and environmental factors. By examining historical, legislative and administrative aspects of environmental and occupational health, students will develop risk assessment and management methods. This course equips students with the knowledge and skills required to evaluate and control risk across different environmental and occupational settings.
Course learning outcomes
- Describe the nature of environmental health hazards, the ways in which they impinge upon communities and occupational groups, and the types of factors that influence the distribution of related health disorders
- Explain "risk" as a central concept in describing, evaluating and managing environmental and occupational health problems
- Describe the roles and relationships of key disciplines in the prevention, investigation and management of environmental and occupational health problems
- Describe environmental and occupational health risks and propose how to evaluate and manage them
