Course learning outcomes
- Critically analyse and synthesise knowledge of mental health and wellbeing in the context of contemporary Australian society
- Critically analyse the relevance of lifespan development theories and attachment theories within the context of midwifery practice in the perinatal period
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of common mental illness and psychological disorders occurring during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, with sophisticated understanding of how this integrates into practice
- Critically evaluate perinatal and mental health issues, demonstrating midwifery leadership in advanced knowledge and skill in communication, appropriate response and referral pathways
- Analyse and interpret the legal and ethical dimensions of maternal healthcare practice in relation to caring for women with mental illness and/or vulnerable women during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period, demonstrating an ability to navigate and influence these frameworks in the advancement of midwifery care
- Critically evaluate and articulate the role of the midwife caring for women who experience traumatic birth, grief and loss
- Exhibits mastery of verbal, written and professional communication, underpinned by the core tenets of midwifery philosophy, and upholding academic integrity and ethical practice
