Course overview

Demonstrate advanced knowledge of maternal and child health by analysing historical and contemporary trends to address pertinent women's and family health issues. Identifying common issues impacting women, infant and child health. Initiate and evaluate interventions, programs, policies, and practices to improve the health of women and children. This course provides students with the opportunity to negotiate and undertake an independent or collaborative program of study that addresses a specific issue/problem relevant to extending their practice role.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of attachment theory to working with children and families, and describe strategies to support parents' knowledge of secure attachment and optimal development and growth in their children
  • Contextualise professional responsibilities and how to implement the United Nations Rights of the Child, mandatory notification obligations and the National plan to end violence against women and children can be implemented in the context of your practice
  • Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team with other professional roles that form early childhood teams that help support women, children and families
  • Conduct an appropriate review of current and emerging evidence as it relates to maternal, child and family's health and wellbeing, and evaluate own practice to appropriately provide a plan of care for all
  • Critically appraise and apply contemporary theories, principles and care frameworks to promote person centred, culturally safe and holistic evidence-based care to women, children and families
  • Conduct and evaluate comprehensive health assessment for women, children and family which is holistic and promotes optimal health, wellbeing and respectful partnerships
