Course overview
The purpose of this course is to provide learners with insight and appreciation of how Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people experience healthcare. The course is designed to promote a critical reflection of learners' own values and attitudes towards identity, cultural safety and the design and provision of healthcare services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples. Learners will analyse how their practice can be defined to play a key role in delivering care to promote health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Learners will explore common health complaints of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and identify how in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders the health disparity and gap can be closed.
Course learning outcomes
- Relate the impact of policies and history to the current cultural and health contexts of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the perceptions of health and wellbeing
- Examine meanings of health and illness from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives
- Explain the importance of cultural awareness and cultural safety in relation to culturally appropriate care and service provision for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- Apply critical reflection on own values and attitudes towards identity, cultural safety and the provision of health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities
- Appreciate the experiences of Indigenous patients and their families when engaging with health services through health journey mapping
- Identify effective strategies for health promotion and health maintenance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
