Course overview

This course aims to provide registered nurses with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to develop advanced theoretical and practical knowledge to be able to provide evidence informed nephrology nursing care. Nephrology Nursing provides a broad approach to assist registered nurses working in nephrology nursing to extend their knowledge that will inform the care and management of people with kidney disease. This course addresses the pathogenesis of kidney disease and the nursing assessment and the management of aboriginal and non-aboriginal peoples with acute, chronic and end stage renal disease. It includes physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacy and nutrition, biochemical pathology and complications arising in the management of kidney disease.

Course learning outcomes

  • Discuss and evaluate the professional and industry standards, policies and principles that guide responsible care and management of people with kidney disease.
  • Demonstrate safe and competent assessment and management of aboriginal and non-aboriginal peoples with acute, chronic and end stage renal disease.
  • Apply critical thinking and evidence-based clinical decision making in the management of patients with kidney disease.
  • Identify and examine the roles, responsibilities and scopes of practice of nurses and other health professionals caring for patients with kidney disease.
  • Develop critical awareness of the range of skills for effective communication and collaboration within the dynamic and complex nephrology nursing care setting.
