Course overview
This course aims to further develop those skills required to function as an advanced Orthopaedic nurse. Specifically the skills and theoretical knowledge required to apply/manage effective traction, splinting and/or immobilise a limb post-injury. This is presented in a theoretical format and via a two-day workshop on campus. This course will also focus on spinal disorders and the knowledge required for the rehabilitation of the spinal and the general orthopaedic patient.
Course learning outcomes
- Debate the theoretical basis that supports the practice of orthopaedic nursing that is based on best available evidence
- Discuss contemporary issues that impact orthopaedic nursing both relevant to clinical practice and to the specialty
- Identify and utilise evidence based practice and knowledge that advances nursing skills and encourages the critical examination of nursing practices in orthopaedics
- Plan and deliver effective care for the orthopaedic patient at an advanced level
- Critique existing practice and implement changes to improve service delivery that is delivered in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrate leadership and mentorship in orthopaedic nursing.
