Microbiology topics included the diagnosis, transmission and surveillance of infectious diseases.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify the structure and function of microorganisms, their habitats and growth requirements.
  • Analyse the factors involved in pathogenicity and virulence of microorganisms and how this relates to the infective process
  • Discuss the mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents and the implications for control of infection in healthcare facilities
  • Discuss the principles of epidemiology and statistical methods relevant to the practice of infection control
  • Critique surveillance systems for healthcare associated infection and its application in a variety of healthcare settings
  • Compare and assess local, national and international approaches to management of pandemics.
