Course overview
To examine the historical, cultural, political, socioeconomic and environmental influences on the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families and communities.
Course learning outcomes
- Synthesise concepts of cross-cultural communication in relation to healthcare practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, demonstrating leadership in reflexivity and cultural humility
- Critically examine and articulate the key demographic, cultural, socio-political and socioeconomic factors that underpin the diverse health issues and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities
- Critically analyse the relationship between the history of race relations in Australia and contemporary socioeconomic disadvantage faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, with advanced understanding of changing epidemiological patterns
- Critically analyse and synthesise knowledge of the cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with regard to the provision of culturally safe healthcare delivery
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of contemporary healthcare strategies as they relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, with sophisticated understanding of the barriers and enablers with regard to maternity care for Aboriginal women and families
- Synthesise concepts for promoting the social, emotional and physical wellbeing of individuals, families and community groups with advanced understanding of contemporary health policy and woman centred care
