Course overview
This course aims to provide the knowledge and skills to provide evidence-based cancer care in a variety of settings across the lifespan. The course aims to increase a student's theoretical knowledge of the disease process and treatment of cancer. It will examine the concepts of epidemiology, etiology and pathology of cancer and haematological disorders along with contemporary and emerging treatment modalities and their effects. The cancer/ haematological journey is considered with a focus on developing an understanding of the patient experience and enhancing therapeutic communication skills. Through undertaking the learning activites and the required assessments you will further develop knowledge of various oncology and haematology nursing roles and special issues in this setting.

Course learning outcomes
- Explore oncology and haematology disorders across the lifespan including pathophysiology, prevention and screening and treatment modalities
- Initiate, plan and implement models of care to establish therapeutic goals, approaches, indications, nursing implications, mechanisms, action and safety issues for patients undergoing haematology and oncology treatment modalities
- Explore advances in cancer treatment modalities and clinical trials and the care implications for patients and families across the life span.
- Describe and analyse issues related to survivorship, late effects and the experience of chronic disease post treatment.
- Analyse and discuss a person-centred approach to establishing culturally sensitive and psychologically safe care for patients and their families across the lifespan.
- Demonstrate advanced communication skills with patients and the interprofessional team to set patient-centred goals and effectively manage challenging conversations throughout the patient's journey.
