Course overview
Theory IV looks at how two subspecialties have adapted to include minimally invasive surgical techniques. Students will learn how to define and measure quality of life and cosmoses - two areas that are cited in support of minimally invasive surgery. They will also explore the process of innovation and the concepts of leadership and finally be introduced to the new field of plasma medicine.
Course learning outcomes
- Understand the history and current practice in minimally invasive surgery in colorectal surgery.
- Be familiar with the pathophysiology of abdominal wall hernia and techniques of repair based on these principles.
- Understand the pathophysiology of obesity and the different minimally invasive bariatric surgical techniques.
- Understand the incidence and causes of thromboembolic events in minimally invasive surgery.
- Be able to review the available technology and indications with regards to neural stimulation.
- Understand the minimally invasive techniques used in vascular surgery.
- Become familiar with the minimally invasive gynaecological surgical procedures particularly those used for clearance of endometriosis.
- Understand the marked differences in anatomy, physiology and surgical technique.
- Understand the different modalities and techniques with regards to destruction of tumours without surgical access.
