Course overview
The aim of this course is to provide students with advanced knowledge and to develop research skills in the analysis, interpretation and communication of information from the scientific literature commensurate with a medical laboratory scientist working in professional practice.
Viruses that cause human disease and laboratory diagnosis of viral infections. Medical parasitology. Medical mycology. Antibiotic resistance: mechanisms, detection, control. Molecular techniques in clinical microbiology. Vaccines. Current issues in clinical microbiology.
Course learning outcomes
- Evaluate techniques required for the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases caused by viruses, fungi and parasites, including detection, isolation and identification of pathogens and commensal microorganisms.
- Apply knowledge and practical skills to the laboratory diagnosis and investigation of infectious disease at an advanced level, including application of molecular techniques.
- Collate, analyse and interpret microbiological test results.
- Evaluate scientific literature in microbiology and apply this to discuss a current topic.
