Course overview
The aim of this course is to demonstrate advanced knowledge of haematological disorders and diagnostic techniques and to critically analyse, interpret and communicate complex scientific information consistent with the level required for medical laboratory scientists operating in professional practice. Anaemia, thalassaemia and haemoglobinopathies; leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloproliferative disorders, myelodysplastic syndromes, multiple myeloma and related disorders; malaria; point of care testing; paediatric and obstetric haematology; blood film morphology; cytochemistry; flow cytometry, cytogenetics and molecular techniques.
Course learning outcomes
- Explain the pathophysiology of the major haematological disorders and relevant diagnostic procedures including specialised techniques.
- Evaluate peripheral blood films for haematological abnormalities including haematological malignancies and species identification of malarial parasites.
- Collate, analyse and interpret haematological test results.
- Demonstrate the ability to integrate results from other disciplines as part of the diagnostic process.
- Produce concise scientific reports including explanation of the rationale for determination of a haematological diagnosis.
- Research peer-reviewed scientific literature in regard to contemporary haematological issues and collaborate to communicate this information effectively in written and oral formats.
