Course overview
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the profession of laboratory medicine, the basic principles and procedures undertaken in a medical laboratory and the role of laboratory medicine in the health sector and the provision of health care. The structure of the health care sector, the role of the pathology laboratory and the diagnostic scientist. Laboratory accreditation, NPAAC, registration. Perspectives on Indigenous Health. Introduction to Histopathology, Haematology, Infectious Diseases, Immunology, Molecular Pathology and Clinical Chemistry. Analytical Techniques. Laboratory calculations. Ethics. Retrieval and critical analysis of information from various sources and presentation information.
Course learning outcomes
- Articulate the role of laboratory medicine in the health care sector and the role of medical scientists in the delivery of diagnostic pathology services.
- Articulate the importance and application of fundamental professional principles including laboratory accreditation, total quality management and workplace health and safety.
- Analyse and apply ethical principles in situations relevant to the profession.
- Describe principles of routine diagnostic tests and how they are applied in the various specialties within diagnostic pathology.
- Retrieve and collate information relevant to professional practice from various sources including textbooks, journals, internet sites, electronic databases and popular media and to assess information for reliability, accuracy and relevance.
- Apply clear, concise, accurate and effective communication skills.
