Course overview

The aim of this course is to examine the historical development of digital technologies and platforms and their impact on storytelling, emphasising their capacity to tell different kinds of stories around the social, cultural and political dimensions of contemporary society. This course expands student understanding of media production by considering how aspects of digital media intersects with local and global issues of space, aesthetics, personal, political, cultural and public life. Drawing on interdisciplinary studies, students will experiment with the affordances of digital media to explore the potential for new types of screen-based narratives.

Course learning outcomes

  • apply an advanced knowledge of the continuities and the differences between traditional screen media and contemporary digital media formats
  • critically analyse how digital technologies have altered the social, cultural and political potential of narrative media.
  • understand and apply advanced theoretical and practical approaches to digital storytelling
