Course overview

This course will introduce students to the key theoretical, formal and practical aspects of Hollywood film and television. Through a historic, industrial and formal survey of Hollywood filmmaking, students will explore classical and contemporary storytelling strategies and uses of film style. In the practical components of the course, students will be introduced to the basic skills, techniques and professional practices which underpin contemporary film and television production as these also derive from Hollywood.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate familiarity with the historic, industrial and formal strategies of Hollywood film and television
  • Display the competent use of camera, sound and editing technologies and techniques and adhere to basic professional practice expectations
  • Implement all stages of the film and television production cycle from concept to screen to create and produce content for film, television and other media forms.
  • Demonstrate the ability to critically analyse Hollywood in writing and in practice.
