Course overview
This course will develop students' understanding of social media's role in transforming societies globally and will prepare students to engage digitally as responsible citizens and as professionals. This course will examine the use of social media to influence people, either individually or as groups within society. Students will be introduced to the ways social media platforms operate and how social media marketing techniques have been used in influence campaigns. Using recent examples, students will develop their understanding of the impact of social media on society.
Course learning outcomes
- Articulate how social media platforms and campaigns impact politics, activism, international diplomacy and conflict through influence campaigns
- Critically evaluate social media practice as it relates to ethical action and social responsibility as a professional and citizen
- Evaluate the use of social media and strategic communication for political and social issue campaigning purposes, applying logical, critical, and creative thinking
- Demonstrate skills in using social media as a resource for learning and in practice
