Course overview
This course is available for students taking an honours degree in Mathematical Sciences. The course will cover an advanced topic in applied mathematics. For details of the topic covered this year please refer to the Course Outline
Course learning outcomes
- Appreciate that water waves are either dispersive or non-dispersive depending on certain constraints of the flow problem.
- Understand the derivation of Euler s equations of motion and the relationship between the potential flow model in free-surface flows.
- Employ a suite of mathematical and computational tools including conformal mapping techniques, asymptotic approximations and numerical solutions to boundary integral equations to obtain solutions to free-surface problems.
- Explain the implication of theoretical predictions in physical applications of free-surface flow problems.
- Demonstrate the ability to apply the theory developed in the course to problems of an appropriate level of difficulty
- Demonstrate the ability to conduct a group project applying the theory developed in this course
- Develop an appreciation of the role of applied probability in mathematical modelling
- Demonstrate skills in communicating mathematics orally and in writing
