Course overview

In this course, students will apply mathematical modelling techniques (empirical, deterministic, stochastic) to real-world problems and case studies. To evaluate the development, solution, and analysis of mathematical models. Model formulation and verification; different types of models (discrete and continuous, deterministic and probabilistic, predictive and descriptive); proportionality and geometric similarity; model fitting with splines; model fitting with the method of least squares; case studies including discrete, continuous, deterministic and probabilistic models. Students will learn how to determine which are the relevant features of a problem, choose the best mathematical tools to model the problem, how to implement the model, how to calibrate the model, and the differences between the various types of model.

Course learning outcomes

  • Identify features amenable to mathematical modelling in real-world situations.
  • Identify and apply relevant mathematical tools to model real-world problems.
  • Implement and solve mathematical models using software.
  • Communicate effectively to explain a real-world problem, a possible mathematical model of the problem, and a possible solution to the model.
