Course overview

This course introduces learners to linguistic ethnography as a means of making visible the ways in which people use and experience language in their social and professional lives. Learners engage with key concepts and methods in linguistic ethnography, building on and applying conceptual and analytical skills developed in the first year of the major. Through an inquiry-based approach, learners augment their skills in explicating the linguistic and social practices that shape peoples daily lives from the standpoint of direct experience. Applying such knowledge and skills enables learners to reveal taken-for-granted processes and expertise that are central to participation in interaction.

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse and synthesise linguistic and observational data of social and professional interactions
  • Demonstrate awareness of diversities of experience that bear on people’s use and understanding of language
  • Substantiate claims about the relevance and meaning of linguistic and social processes in the lives of individuals and communities
