Course overview

This course will provide students with a comprehensive overview of dispute resolution processes, civil procedure rules, and the ethical and professional obligations of lawyers relevant to contemporary and emerging systems of dispute resolution and civil legal practice in the 21st century. Students will critically evaluate and apply rules, legislation, cases, and dispute resolution processes to formulate and communicate solutions to disputes that are client-centred, professionally responsible, and adaptable to the evolving legal landscape. This is a compulsory course which addresses the mandatory requirements for Civil Dispute Resolution for accreditation purposes while also equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to thrive in the dynamic and evolving legal profession of the future.

  • Critically evaluate dispute resolution processes available to manage and resolve civil disputes
  • Apply dispute resolution processes to hypothetical civil disputes to manage and resolve disputes
  • Identify and apply rules, legislation and cases relevant to civil legal practice to manage and resolve civil disputes
  • Draft and critique court documents applicable to civil legal claims ensuring compliance with relevant rules and legislation
  • Identify, apply and communicate ethical and professional obligations of lawyers governing civil legal practice
