Course overview

The aim of this course is, to convey knowledge and comprehension of the basic principles of negligence and trespass, and introduce students to the basic aspects of oral communication in law, including: small group presentations, oral legal argument, and client interviewing.

Course learning outcomes

  • Problem Solving: analyse a factual scenario involving specific torts, recognise the legal issues and apply the law to determine rights and liabilities
  • Case Analysis: classify and synthesise the rules, principles and policies of tort law according to authoritative sources and explain their historical and legal relationship
  • Purposes and Perspectives: recognise the dynamic nature of the law of torts and evaluate and critically discuss its development in response to social, economic and political changes
  • Communication: use correct legal terminology, and apply written and oral communication skills to small group presentations, advocacy, oral legal argument, and client interviewing
