Course overview
This course equips students with an understanding of equity and trust law, focusing on key principles such as the nature of equity, fiduciary obligations, unconscionable conduct together with express, resulting and constructive trusts. These topics require students to engage with fundamental social justice issues and environmental sustainability issues and consider the importance and means of achieving equality and equity in law. It is a compulsory course designed to meet law degree accreditation requirements, and emphasises skills in legal problem-solving and drafting. It also engages with students to develop analytical capabilities, written communication and empathic understanding of the impact of law on individuals, preparing them to become ethical and socially conscious legal professionals.

- Explain elements of the law of equity including fiduciary obligations, unconscionable transactions, trusts, equitable proprietary interests, equitable assignments and equitable remedies
- Apply legal principles relating to equity and trusts law to problem-based scenarios to generate solutions that are reflective of professional legal standards
- Analyse case law and statutory developments in contemporary equity and trusts law and assess its impact on social and policy contexts, demonstrating an ability to exercise appropriate judgement when applying law in this field
- Communicate solutions to equity and trusts law problems in both written and oral forms, reflecting professional legal standards and effective communication techniques
