to introduce students to international law's vocabulary, concepts and institutions
to examine international law's regulation of relations between States, individuals and other actors
to enable students to identify sources of international law and assess their validity and application
to introduce students to jurisdictional issues and to issues of state responsibility
to consider the role of international law plays in relation to Australian domestic law and within the Asia Pacific region
to examine the role that international law plays in times of peace and crisis and how international law is affected by its political context
Course learning outcomes
- Identify and explain the structure, institutions, principles and vocabulary of international law
- Assess the international legal implications of current events and Australian foreign policy
- Identify, interpret and apply the sources of international law
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the international and national legal systems
- Discuss the history and debates concerning the law regulating armed conflict and the peaceful resolution of disputes and current and proposed reforms to the United Nations
- Apply persuasive international legal arguments in a domestic and international context
