Course overview

This course examines the system of international labour law as it has developed under the aegis of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). It includes an examination of the following topics: the challenges of regulating for `decent work in the global community; the establishment, constitution and structure of the International Labour Organisation (ILO); the international labour standards code, with special attention to chosen topics (eg, the employment relationship, precarious work, equality, freedom of association, child labour, forced labour, working time, and migrant labour); and the enforcement of labour standards and the work of the major committees of the ILO with oversight of standards, including the Committee of Experts on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations, International Labour Conference Committee on the Application of Standards, and the Committee on Freedom of Association. Students in this course will receive guidance on how to select a research topic in international labour law, and how to find, and most effectively use, relevant research materials, including the resources available through the ILO.
