Course overview

To examine the role of international environmental law in addressing the global dimensions of environmental protection
to compare distinctive approaches to the implementation of international environmental law at the domestic level
to analyse the link between poverty and environmental harm and the role of law in promoting environmental sustainability

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse and explain the role of international environmental law in contributing to the goal of environmental sustainability, particularly through the recognition of core principles (for example, precaution and inter-generational equity)
  • Analyse and explain the role of multilateral environmental agreements and other sources of international environmental law in promoting environmental sustainability (including issues with respect to compliance and enforcement)
  • Analyse and explain the role performed by international institutions in the implementation of environmental sustainability
  • Appraise the role of international environmental law in addressing some key environmental sustainability issues (e.g., climate change, trans-boundary air pollution, biodiversity protection, forests protection, and human rights and the environment)
  • Analyse and compare innovative responses to the implementation of international environmental law at the domestic level in connection with the same key issues
