Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop professional skills and values with a structured analysis of, and reflection on, professional experience gained in the Legal Advice Clinic. In addition to analysing and reflecting on their personal experiences students will consider the role of legal professionals in the legal system and in society generally. Students will attend their Clinic placement one day per week. Students will also attend seminars designed to prepare them for their Clinic placement, enable constructive reflection on their progress and to assist the preparation of their assessment. The seminars will also focus upon developing students' understanding of work in a clinical setting as an 'active' context for critical reflection on their personal development and their role as a professional in society. During the course of their Clinic placement students will also present material from their experience via online discussion boards for early feedback in relation to their learning and in order to engage with their peers. During the course of their Clinic placement students will prepare tasks as set out in a Placement Workbook. Following their placement students must submit a reflective essay. Formative feedback on portfolios will be provided by academic staff and supervisors on a regular basis prior to submission. All students in the Law programs who, as part of a course, undertake activities where interaction with clients/the public/an external organisation are required, such as industry placements or clinical placement, must demonstrate that they have a current National Police Clearance, which is valid for the duration of the course. External placement providers may also require a current DHS - Working with Children Check (WWCC), which is valid for the duration of the course. The National Police Check will list disclosable court outcomes that may prevent clinical placement/industry placement involvement, requiring withdrawal from the course.
