Course overview

The course introduces students to international law sources and institutions and examines the role of international law in addressing the use of force and the peaceful settlement of disputes. Content includes: International humanitarian law: Jus ad bellum and jus in bello; International criminal law and the ICC rules; Enforcement and the environment; Territory and jurisdiction; State responsibility; Peaceful Settlement of disputes in International Law; Reforms to the United Nations; Nuclear weapons.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explore vocabulary, concepts, and institutions of international law.
  • Discuss the history and debates concerning the law regulating armed conflict and the peaceful resolution of disputes and current and proposed reforms to the United Nations.
  • Assess the international legal implications of current events and Australian foreign policy.
