Course overview

This course aims to provide students with a strong foundational knowledge of the Australian federal system of public law and governance, with a particular focus upon related theories, perspectives and social justice issues. Students will also develop skills in critical reflection and legal argument. In this course, students will explore the structure and operation of Australia's federal system of public law and governance and related theories of law, government and justice; the perspectives and position of First Nations people within the Australian legal system; and topical social justice issues with respect to citizenship and rights. Alongside this content, students will develop writing skills in critical reflection and legal argument.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the concepts and structure of Australia's federal system of law and governance
  • Assess the context and history of sovereignty and Aboriginal self-determination within our legal system, from a First Nations perspective
  • Identify and explore social justice issues within the relevant conceptual framework of public law and governance
  • Communicate using foundational writing skills applicable to a legal context
