Course overview
This elective course equips students to address the local, national and global environmental challenges that are critical to a sustainable future. Students will be introduced to the concepts and principles that underpin environmental law at the international and federal levels, and state and local levels in South Australia. As graduate lawyers, they will be able to provide leadership on the legal dimensions to environmental damages and their social, economic and cultural effects. Students will study current and emerging environmental issues and the response of the law, and learn about the constraints of federalism in the legal responses that impact matters such as environmental planning, development control and protection of biological diversity. They will gain knowledge, skills, and attributes to develop innovative legal solutions informed by cross-disciplinary perspectives.
Course learning outcomes
- Identify and explain key principles of international, federal, local and state environmental protection laws
- Critically analyse and explain state and federal powers, responsibilities and institutions relating to Australian Environmental Law
- Apply legislation, regulations and case law to provide advice in relation to environmental problems
- Research, critically analyse and explain the role of law in promoting environmental sustainability and addressing environmental issues
