Course overview

This course is designed to help you improve your command of French speaking, reading, writing and listening at the intermediate to upper-intermediate level. It offers a deep dive into the world of global French, the monde francophone, and the continued literary, economic and linguistic role French plays in all four corners of the world. A focus throughout the course is developing language tools to read, understand and critically interpret French-language texts about the Francophone world and to effectively communicate ideas about those texts orally and in writing.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary cultural, historical, political, and socioeconomic issues in France and the Francophone world
  • Evaluate France’s role and influence in a global context
  • Identify and discuss key elements of French cuisine, architecture, art, film and television, and music
  • Analyse a variety of contemporary media productions and respond to them using intermediate vocabulary and grammar in the target language
  • Demonstrate an ability to collect and organise information, and communicate arguments in clear French, both written and spoken, to an academic audience
  • Develop an appreciation for the French culture, language, history, and cultural production
