Course overview

The course introduces students to the rudiments of Latin grammar, syntax and vocabulary with a view to enabling them to read and comprehend (modified) texts in the original language. Students are required to complete a variety of language tasks including translation both into and from Latin and answering comprehension questions on passages in Latin. This course develops students' ability to identify and analyse fundamental grammatical constructions in English and Latin and improves their comprehension skills.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate basic skills in Latin pronunciation and reading Latin aloud.
  • Show knowledge and understanding of traditional grammatical concepts in English and apply them to Latin syntax and vocabulary.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in analysing a variety of more complex grammatical constructions and appreciate the different ways in which Latin and English express complex ideas.
  • Apply enhanced skills in comprehension and linguistic analysis to Latin texts to elicit understanding.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a basic Latin vocabulary of circa 400 words.
  • Display sensitivity to linguistic and cultural differences between the ancient Romans and modern society through an appreciation of how languages shape meaning.
