Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop students' advanced skills in the compilation of news reports on location as well as the technical competencies of filming and editing required of video journalists, and to develop students' advanced abilities in writing and presentation commensurate with industry practice. Students will build on broadcasting skills in the preparation of television news/current affairs and video journalist (VJ) versions, compiling television and video journalism stories and filming and editing procedures. They will also demonstrate advanced competencies in producing skills and working to deadlines, scripting for television news/current affairs and video journalism work online as well as interviewing techniques. Students will demonstrate advanced abilities in identifying potential television news and video journalist stories, producing and personal presentations according to industry standards. Students will also demonstrate advanced capabilities to work collaboratively as team members as well as autonomously.

Course learning outcomes

  • apply advanced writing techniques for television news/current affairs and online work (both introductions and packaged stories)
  • apply advanced capabilities of filming and editing using industry-standard software
  • apply advanced skills in research, interviewing and news gathering techniques
  • use advanced skills in identifying key legal and ethical obligations associated with television reporting and video journalism work
