Course overview
This course will introduce students to the principles and practices of news and social media production focussing on the specialised skills related to professional practice and industry-standard technologies. Students will explore the ever-changing trends of news production from newspapers to the online multi-platform environment incorporating print, broadcast and social media technologies. Students will be introduced to the use of digital media through industry-standard software and programs to facilitate the development of requisite skills. Students will be able to produce digital media and materials to provide accurate and reliable information to its audience.
Course learning outcomes
- understand terminology of news-based print and online publishing industries
- identify and list the phases of convergent production processes
- demonstrate an understanding in identifying appropriate communication styles and formats for print and multi-platform online publications
- demonstrate an understanding in the tools and techniques involved in creating news in different formats using hands-on experience
- Identify key ethical and legal obligations associated with news production
