Course overview

This course prepares students for diverse fields of media and communication work by introducing them to the variety of positions and types of employment that could be of interest, providing introductory career guidance and advice for pathways into a variety of media and communications careers. It introduces students to the expectations of a range of professional media and communication roles within a variety of organisations, including fast-developing media industries, government, not-for-profit and community organisations, and the agency environment. Students will explore the changing nature of professional media careers and the role of communication professionals in broader industry, government and not-for-profit environments.  

Course learning outcomes

  • demonstrate understanding of the range of potential media and communication careers and environments
  • communicate and critically reflect on their identity as a future media and communication practitioner
  • demonstrate introductory understanding of the basics of career planning and positioning, including CV writing, networking and social media, and portfolio building understandings of visual and aesthetic media
  • collaborate and communicate effectively with peers to both give and receive feedback
