Course overview

This course will introduce key sociological, theoretical and structural perspectives on popular media with an emphasis on taste cultures, identity politics, participatory and convergence cultures, representation, affective capitalism, medium specificity and transmedia. Students are encouraged to analyse the complexities of popular media and its social and cultural function.  

Course learning outcomes

  • describe the relationship between popular media and society using critical theories and frameworks
  • interpret media and communication studies scholarship on popular media and society
  • evaluate key issues and debates in contemporary popular media culture
  • analyse media case studies using conceptual and theoretical frameworks relevant to popular media
