Course overview

This course will introduce students to the fundamental elements of interior design as a discipline and a practice. Students will be introduced to history and development of the interior design profession; categories of commercial practice and specialisations; anthropometric and ergonomic relationship of the human body in interior space; space planning principles. Employing digital technologies, students will be introduced to detailing and material strategies; passive environmental design and sustainability; principles of documentation techniques for designed interior space including scale, dimensioning, cross-referencing and annotation.

Course learning outcomes

  • apply spatial planning and ergonomic principles to the design of three-dimensional interior space
  • demonstrate an understanding of environmental, social and cultural factors in interior design practice
  • identify notable historic and contemporary examples of interior design practice
  • produce basic orthographic documentation of interior space in hand drawn and digital media
