Course overview

This course will provide foundational knowledge and skills in Information Technology including computer architectures, operating systems, the web, cloud, and data analytics. In this course students will gain skills and knowledge in the following areas: introduction to computers including history; computer hardware (CPU, memory, storage); operating systems; software applications; network introduction; introduction to data storage and databases; data science foundations (big data, data wrangling, AI and machine learning); cloud foundations; ethics as an IT professional; future technologies.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe key features of computer hardware, operating systems, Internet of Things, data analytics and cloud computing using appropriate terminology.
  • Provide an infrastructure solution for a small and medium-sized enterprise to meet their specific needs.
  • Explain an emerging IT technology and how it is likely to effect business in the future.
  • Understand the fundamentals of ethical behaviour and the Australian Computer Society Code of Conduct.
  • Identify, generate and communicate opportunities for the innovative use of information and technology solutions in a business context.
