Course overview

In this course, students will develop an in-depth theoretical understanding of network security principles and the tools and configurations available with an emphasis on practical application. This course will cover a variety of topics, with a particular emphasis on network security with Fortinet equipment. The content of this course will include implementation of SD-WAN, Security Fabric, Authentication, Authorisation, and Accounting (AAA), firewall policies, Network Address Translation (NAT), logging and monitoring, Web Filtering, Application Control, Antivirus, Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), and Virtual Private Networks (VPN).

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the security goals and attacker models facing modern network infrastructure.
  • Describe how each of the network layers can be secured using current or future technologies.
  • Assess secure design principles in network architectures.
  • Mitigate network threats by implementing a range of technical solutions including firewalls and administer authentication, authorisation and accounting (AAA) where appropriate.
  • Implement secure communication channels according to a design by applying a range of network security tools.
  • Recommend the most appropriate ethical actions when undertaking reconnaissance and penetration testing type activities.
