Course overview

This course will increase student's ability to develop specifications for the design and implementation of appropriate networking and telecommunications infrastructure and services with consideration of business needs and industry trends. Review of Data-link, Network and Transport Layer Terminology; Hierarchical and Logical Network Design; Network Testing and Documentation; VLSM IP addressing; Switching, VLANs and Trunking; Routing Protocols including RIP and OSPF; Network address translation (NAT), DHCP configuration; Security Strategies including access control lists (ACL); WAN Technologies; WiFi; IP Version 6.

Course learning outcomes

  • Understand the issues related to the data link and network layer in a network protocol stack
  • Identify what issues are related to quality of service within the network layer and suggest techniques for maximising these
  • Analyse the differences between various routing algorithms and be able to recommend the most appropriate one for a particular situation
  • Recommend the necessary changes that need to be made to the network architecture if a new application technology is introduced
  • Highlight the differences between the various WAN technologies and suggest an appropriate one for a particular situation
  • Configure CISCO networking equipment including routers and switches
