Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with a general understanding of Enterprise Resource Planning systems and a conceptual knowledge of Business Process Re-engineering principles by analysing enterprise processes and redesigning them. The aim of this course is to provide students with a practical introduction to SAP, how it is used in business, and the benefits of using such a system for an enterprise. Business functions, processes and data requirements, information systems, enterprise integration, motives for integration, integration methodologies and techniques development of Enterprise Resource Planning systems.

SAP Functionality
SAP architecture, SAP components and terminology, SAP application functionality and modules.

Enterprise Resource Planning and Business Process Re-engineering
Competitive advantage from integrated information systems, sustainable competitive advantage. Starting over. Distinction between tasks and processes, role of information technology in business process re-engineering, Business Process Re-engineering guidelines, benefits of Business Process Re-engineering for effective SAP implementation.

Enterprise Resource Planning Implementation
Implementing, configuring, supporting and enhancing SAP in an enterprise.

Course learning outcomes

  • Discuss the contemporary relationships between information systems, organisations, and the integration of acquired information.
  • Describe how ERP programs help organisations manage their business process through a common database and shared management reporting tools.
  • Critically evaluate the information technology tools that support BPR within firms that have already implemented an ERP system.
  • Evaluate the relative importance of the change management issues, process redesign issues, and user impact concerns that are a major focus of an ERP implementation.
  • Discuss how information technology acts as an enabler to process change.
