Course overview

The aim of this course is to plan, design and conduct experiments effectively and analyse the resulting data to obtain objective conclusions. Basic experimental design concepts such as participant recruitment, design validity, statistical significance, inclusion/exclusion criteria, informed consent; hypothesis design and data collection; randomization techniques; common pitfalls in experiments requiring data analysis; how to optimise experimental designs, analysis of experiments using appropriate software.

Course learning outcomes

  • Construct an experiment to address a set of requirements in a data analytics setting.
  • Identify the stages, steps and resources needed to deploy a data analytics experiment.
  • Apply the relevant statistical methods to analyse experiments and communicate results effectively.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using appropriate software for analysis of experiments.
