Course overview
This course aims to develop knowledge and experience of the value and place of dance and alternative movement within education and lifelong physical activity pursuits. It will introduce students to a range of somatic and expressive movement styles, their physical, social, cognitive, and affective potential, as well as safe movement practices. The course will develop personal skills, body awareness, coordination, and flexibility as well as teaching methodologies to facilitate learning in educational contexts. Theoretical and pedagogical concepts are applied to movement experiences with a particular focus on individual development and the use of space to prepare graduates to teach people of all ages the value and joy of movement.
Course learning outcomes
- Instruct meaningful dance and movement experiences to a range of populations
- Plan for developmentally appropriate dance/movement experiences for a specific population
- Analyse the physical, social, cognitive and affective benefits of a particular dance form as well as educational outcomes and pedagogical practices
- Extend personal skills and range of movement including skill development, memory, sequencing and coordination
- Apply and evaluate various pedagogical approaches to the teaching of dance and movement
