Course overview

This course aims to equip learners with the knowledge and ability to describe, measure, analyse and communicate the mechanical principles underlying human movement in the context of exercise, sport and health. This course will introduce learners to biomechanical principles and their applications in human movement to understand human performance, mechanisms and prevention of injury or chronic conditions, and interactions between the body, equipment, and the environment. Learners will develop skills in the quantitative analysis of human movement, including the ability to contextualise and communicate findings from biomechanical problems and analyses to relevant stakeholders. This course aligns with the program’s goals of developing a comprehensive understanding, analytical and communication skills relevant to the design and delivery of exercise based interventions for the purpose of improving health, fitness, well-being and performance.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe biomechanical principles and how they relate to the analysis of human movement
  • Analyse biomechanical problems associated with human movement to inform strategies to enhance performance, and understand, prevent, or manage injury
  • Apply the principles of biomechanical analysis of human movement for different populations in the context of health, exercise, sport and activities of daily living
  • Interpret and communicate biomechanical data to clients, exercise and sport science professionals and stakeholders
