Course overview
This capstone course aims to equip students with knowledge and skills of the theory and practice of contemporary strategic human resource management. Evolution of HRM; types of strategic HRM; strategic fit between environment, business strategy, HR strategy and HR practices; different conceptual approaches to HRM and strategy; design of appropriate HR practices to support business and HR strategy integration; current issues in HR strategy and professional practice; environmental and organisational assessment; strategic dimensions and implications of operational HR practices; current issues in HR professional practice.
Course learning outcomes
- Critically examine the evolution and practice of Strategic HRM. Analyse theoretical interpretations of strategic HRM.
- Analyse and apply recent innovations in in strategic HRM theory and practice.
- Undertake an environmental and organisational assessment, and propose organisationally appropriate HR strategy and operational practices.
- Demonstrate use of appropriate communication techniques to a variety of audiences.
- Understand the ethical and international dimensions of the practice of strategic HRM, and integrate this awareness into the practice of strategic HRM.
- Demonstrate skills in working independently and autonomously on projects.
- Demonstrate Business Enterprise Skills in the context of the Human Resource Management discipline: i) Self Management (advanced level); and ii) Problem Solving (advanced level).
