Course overview
This course enables students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the history, stakeholders and their inter-relationships, laws, and current practices in industrial relations in Australia. Employment is one of the central features of the lives of most people in the world. Understanding the nature of the employment relationship is essential to have a good understanding of work and its management in the modern economy. This course very much focuses on employment as being a "relationship" and this relationship involves three key actors- management/owners, workers and the state/government. The primary focus of the course will be on employment relations in the Australian context but will also draw lessons from other contexts. Students are assessed through an essay and examination.
