Course overview
This course actively discusses and analyses key debates surrounding sustainable destination management and tourism impacts to provide critical insights into this important topic. Specific attention is given to efforts to achieve sustainability goals, considering place, people, culture, local economy, and environment. Strategies across social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental aspects, along with implications from government, business/industry and local stakeholders are discussed. The course aims to enhance students' critical and reflective thinking skills in debating concepts and case studies, as well as fostering creativity in addressing the complex challenges of making tourist destinations more sustainable.
Course learning outcomes
- Argue a case for and against the proposition that tourism has the capacity to promote sustainable development goals
- Critique different levels of economic costs and benefits of tourism on international business and tourism destinations
- Assess theoretical concepts and tools to manage various impacts of tourism on destination resources, culture and society
- Develop effective strategies for minimising negative impacts of tourism and for sustainable tourism development
