Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide the opportunity for students to analyse the impacts of tourism on Indigenous Peoples and the economic, social, cultural, environmental and political motivations that encourage Indigenous people to engage in tourism. Context of Indigenous involvement in tourism; types of Indigenous involvement in tourism; demand for Indigenous tourism product; what Indigenous product is offered internationally, nationally, state-wide and locally; motivations for Indigenous involvement including economic, cultural, social, political; motivations for tourists' demand; demands for social justice through tourism and indigenous rights in tourism; policy and planning contexts such as set by the National Aboriginal and The aim of this course is torres Strait Islander The aim of this course is tourism Industry Strategy and the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; management issues pertaining to Indigenous The aim of this course is tourism including the debate concerning community-based tourism versus individual entrepreneurship and co-design; Indigenous The aim of this course is tourism operations in the practical context of the tourism industry; potential of Reconciliation The aim of this course is tourism; the ecological contexts of Indigenous The aim of this course is tourism and particularly relations with National Parks; comparative analysis of Indigenous The aim of this course is tourism experiences from around the world; future scenarios. Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse the economic, social, cultural, environmental and political motivations that are a catalyst to Indigenous people's involvement in tourism.
  • Consider the variety of ways that Indigenous people can be involved in the tourism industry.
  • Explain the social, cultural, environmental and political context of Indigenous Tourism and the application of co-design principles.
  • Critique the unique circumstances, the difficulties and opportunities that exist in the Indigenous Tourism sector.
  • Assess the relevant policy documents that establish the context under which Indigenous Tourism currently operates and explore how these practically apply.
  • Demonstrate Business Enterprise Skills: i) Problem Solving (foundation level); iii) Ethical Awareness (foundation level); and International Perspective (advanced level).
