Course overview

This course aims to teach students advanced psychological and public health knowledge regarding physical health in groups, in the context of the biopsychosocial model, including epidemiology, health economics and preventative measures such as designing, implementing and evaluating health promotion and policy. Complementing what students have previously learnt about health behaviours and health psychology in individuals, students will extend their knowledge to consider health at group and population levels. In combination, this knowledge ensures that students can apply their skills in health promotion and clinical health psychology settings.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge regarding models of health behaviours and health behaviour change, and health and illness perceptions at individual, community and population levels
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of social and cognitive psychology of health behaviours at individuals and population levels
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge in using public health, health services and population health approaches to select and tailor assessment for co-morbid physical and psychological health conditions
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge in the selection, design and implementation of culturally responsive population-based psychological interventions
  • Demonstrate advanced understanding of interdisciplinary team work to promote the health of individuals, groups and populations
  • Demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate individual, group or community programs designed to promote health and wellbeing and prevent illness
