Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop an understanding of epidemiological concepts. Epidemiology defined, variations in disease by time, place and person, sources of data, incidence, prevalence and other rates, causation, bias, confounding and effect modification, randomised controlled trials, drug trials, cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies, hybrid designs, sample size and power, relative risk, odds ratio, absolute risk reduction, number needed to treat, attributable risk, screening, diagnosis, ROC analysis.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of descriptive epidemiology, different types of rates of disease and the principles of causation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic study designs used in epidemiological research.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of concepts of risk and disease and the association between them.
