Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop an advanced understanding of adapted physical activity and exercise for health and wellbeing. This course will examine the importance of physical activity (PA) and exercise for all, including facilitators and barriers to engagement and the benefits of participation. Using global guidelines and principles, students will learn how to work with people with different abilities and needs. Understanding of the impact of disability on PA and exercise will be developed using case studies.

Course learning outcomes

  • Discuss the social and environmental factors that affect participation in adapted and physical activity exercise and sport
  • Critically evaluate the importance of adapted physical activity exercise and sport and the benefits of regular participation for all
  • Demonstrate how physical activity, exercise and sport can be adapted using contemporary guidelines and principles of inclusion
  • Demonstrate effective professional and respectful communication and presentation skills
